The active ingredient in milk thistle called silymarin has been shown to treat liver problems. Silymarin, acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production, detoxifying the liver keeping toxins such as those created from drinking alcohol from attaching to liver cells.  Silymarin is considered an anti-inflammatory and helps promote cell repair of the liver.
